PHNOM PENH, Cambodia 25 Auguest, 2025 — The Cambodian National Assembly urged Thailand to fully implement the ceasefire agreement during the opening of the fourth session of the seventh legislature Thursday.
Assembly President Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary led members of Parliament, government officials, and others in paying tribute to soldiers who sacrificed their lives defending Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In her remarks, she reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to peace and called on Thailand to uphold its commitments under the ceasefire agreement. She emphasized that the peaceful resolution of the border dispute should be pursued through dialogue and cooperation.
Samdech Khuon Sudary also expressed appreciation for the government’s efforts to safeguard Cambodia’s sovereignty while adhering to international law. She said peace and security remain central to Cambodia’s foreign policy and that border areas should become zones of friendship and development.
The assembly leader highlighted the outcome of the recent high-level meetings, including a special session in Putrajaya on July 28. The meeting, led by Malaysia as ASEAN chair and with support from the United States and China, helped protect the livelihoods of thousands of Cambodians and set the stage for a follow-up border committee meeting held Aug. 7, which produced a consensus on 13 key issues.
Samdech Khuon Sudary called for the immediate establishment of an ASEAN observer team and the development of standard operating procedures and terms of reference. She described these steps as vital to restoring bilateral relations and ensuring long-term peace.
She also praised the role of international partners, particularly the interim observer team led by a Malaysian defense attaché, which has been monitoring ceasefire compliance.
The president expressed gratitude to countries and organizations that provided humanitarian aid to Cambodian refugees affected by border tensions.
In her closing remarks, she paid tribute to families of fallen soldiers and the armed forces. She reiterated calls for the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers detained by Thailand, saying their freedom is essential to strengthening national unity and protecting Cambodia’s sovereignty.
Cambodia’s top legislator underscored that the government remains committed to peaceful solutions and regional stability, urging both sides to respect existing agreements and work together toward lasting peace.
